  • Where is ISMU?

    I.S.M.U. is situated in the city of Dhanbad in the state of Jharkhand.It is at a distance of 4km from Dhanbad Railway Station.

  • How do I reach Dhanbad?

    Dhanbad is situated around 270 kms from Calcutta.All important trains including Rajdhani & Shatabdi Express stop here. If you are coming from North, take either Rajdhani Express, Poorva Express, Kalka Mail, Jammu-Tawi Express, or New-Delhi-Howrah Express. In addition Purushottam Express and Jharkhand Express pass through Gomoh, which is 30 minutes from Dhanbad. If you are coming from Bombay ,Bombay Howrah mail is the direct train to Dhanbad. There is one bi-weekly train from Ahmedabad to Dhanbad. From South –Allepy Dhanbad Express is the direct train. Otherwise come to Howrah and from Howrah you have a large number of trains to Dhanbad.   • How is the law & order situation in Dhanbad?

    Population being cosmopolitan in nature there is rarely any disturbance here. A cycle rickshaw/taxi is available throughout the day from Dhanbad Railway Station to ISMU campus. Further ISMU has its own security staff, which makes the security inside ISMU campus perfect. Additional security is provided in the girls' hostels.

  • Why is it called School of Mines?

    ISMU was established in 1926 on the pattern of the Royal School of Mines, London. Inspite of nine different B Tech Branches and many M Tech & M.Sc Courses, the traditional name is still maintained due to its rich heritage.

  • Does School of Mines teach Computer Engineering, Electronics Engineering & Mechanical Engineering related to mines only?

    Not at all. These courses are comparable with those offered by IITs.

  • What are the Courses offered at ISMU?

    It offers nine B Tech Courses – Mining Engineering, Mineral Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,Mining Machinery Engineering, Electrical Engineering & Enviromental Engineering. In addition ISMU offers fifteen M Tech courses mostly in engineering & M.Phil Courses in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics, M.Sc/M.Sc Tech courses in Applied Geology & Applied Geophysics, M.Sc in Maths & Computing, MBA & PhD in all braches.

  • How do these courses compare with courses of IITs & other reputed institutes?

    Three of the courses – Petroleum Engineering, Mineral Engineering & Mining Machinery Engineering – are unique – not there in any of the IITs. They stand high compared to similar courses anywhere else. Other courses have syllabi comparable to those of IITs and other reputed Institutes.

  • How is the placement scenario?

    There is a Training & Placement Section which takes care of placement of students by arranging Campus Interviews by reputed Companies coming from all over India in the 3rd & 4th yr of studies. As the situation stands now there is more than 99% placement through Campus Interviews. Some others also get placement through Off Campus Interviews. ISMU alumni hold many senior positions in many reputed organizations in India & Abroad.

  • How is the Academic Life at ISMU?

    Academic Life is excellent supported by internationally recognized faculty with Modern Laboratories & Central facilities like Computer Centre, Central Library.

  • How are the Computer & Internet Facilities?

    All Departments have separate Computer Labs with Internet connection – International Internet Gateway at ISMU has a present bandwidth of 1 mbps. It uses U.S and Global Internet Backbone through Sing Tel Gateway covering ISMU to Singapore through a single hop using Ku-band. Computer Centre, which can be used by any student any time, is well equipped with Modern Computers with Internet Connection. Each Hostel is provided with two Computer rooms with Internet facilities.

  • What is the type of accommodation in hostel?

    There are five boys and two girls hostel. One 800 seater boys’ hostel is under construction. Accommodation for all students is provided. Girls Hostel is likely to be expanded soon.

  • What is the scope of pursuing higher studies abroad?

    Each year some students go for higher studies abroad. Any student willing to go to the countries like USA, Canada, Australia, U.K etc get admissions and almost every student getting admission also gets financial assistance in term of scholarship and teaching assistance. Many faculty members in foreign universities are alumni of ISMU. Some join IIMs/FMs/XLRI & other reputed Institutions after graduation.

  • How are the extra-curricular activities?

    There is a students society for allround development of students. Other Societies – Cultural Scientific & Literary Society, Music Club, Yoga Centre, Photographic Society, Cyber Society, Chayanika Sangh- promote all round growth of students. Facilities for all types of indoor & outdoor games are also available.

  • What are other facilities in the Campus?

    There is an extension counter of State Bank of India within the Campus with ATM facility. There is one Post Office, two Canteens, one Stationery cum Book Shop with Xerox Machine, STD Booth, Computer with typing & printing facility, Gymnasium within the campus.

  • Then why is ISMU not becoming an IIT?

    As already mentioned, ISMU has its rich heritage. It has strong alumni all over the world. A proposal for ISMU for becoming an IIT is discussed often. However to convert any institution into IIT is a policy decision by Central Government.
